Abstract

The proposed research will apply state-of-the-art mass spectrometric approaches developed for large complex molecules to interrogate chemical composition of Humic Like Substanses. Specifically, we will utilize high mass resolution and accuracy of Fourier transform LTQ-OrbitrapTM mass spectrometry (MS) for accurate determination of the molecular weight of the molecules, while molecular structure will be determined from fragmentation patterns obtained using MS/MS experiments. (MS/MS experiment involves mass selection of the ion of interest in the first MS stage, excitation of the ion followed by its dissociation and mass analysis of the resulting structure-specific fragments in the second MS stage).
