Biofilm reactor development and characterization studies

EMSL Project ID
30497

Abstract

This proposal addresses the development of biofilm-based methods for the economical production of biochemicals and bio-fuels. Biofilms have the potential to solve many of the problems of conventional bio-based methods. A NMR-compatible hollow fiber membrane biofilm reactor (HFMBR) will be used to characterize lactic acid (LA) generation from potato waste broth medium (PBM). A combination of live/in-situ and effluent studies will be performed to develop HFMBR configuration and operation for optimum product yield.
