Al-27 NMR Analysis of Lactate Media Containing Al Colloids
EMSL Project ID

Abstract
Preliminary Al-27 NMR results show the formation of mixed-coordination Al oxide colloids in lactate media. These colloids yield a 5000-Hz FWHM signal, but we are uncertain as to whether this represents single aggregates or a range of smaller particles. Furthermore, the colloids are increasingly hard to detect using ICP-MS as pH increases from 6.5 to 8.3. Thus, Al-27 NMR is the only technique available to determined the concentration of these colloids and to further characterize their properties. In this proposal, we request NMR time to determine 1) standard curves for Al (0-10 mM) in the media as a function of pH (study will be coordinated with identical analyses by ICP-MS), 2) T1 correlation studies of one or two samples to determine whether they behave as single large particles or a suite of smaller particles, and 3) analysis of media having different pH buffers to determine the possible role of the buffer in the colloid formation and structure. A publication was submitted and these data are needed to resolve the reviewers' comments.
