Structure-Property and Interfacial Relationships in Thin Film Energy Conversion Materials and Coatings

Abstract
We propose to use of EMSL surface analysis, electron microscopy, laser spectroscopy and other analytical capabilities to characterize nanoscale organic and inorganic materials and hybrid thin film coatings being developed for thin film energy conversion applications. Thin films deposited by physical and chemical vapor deposition processes are integral parts of advanced concepts for large area thin film scintillators, solar cell collectors and advanced flat panel large area lighting technologies. Characterization of such films and their constituent materials to accurately determine thickness, microstructure, chemical purity, uniformity, crystallography and photophysical properties is critical for their development for these applications. We are proposing to use EMSL facilities required for these activities on an as-needed basis. The work described is not proprietary and will be disseminated in the open literature with EMSL acknowledgement as appropriate.
