Environmental Chemistry of Fe-containingMineral Dust Particles
EMSL Project ID

Abstract
Iron is a key element for growth and metabolism in marine organisms. Solubilization of iron in mineral dust particles resulting from its atmospheric chemistry may substantially increase its bioavailability and impact substantially atmospheric and oceanic environment. Individual mineral dust particles collected in the regional study in the north coastal area of Chile provides a unique opportunity to examine environmental chemistry of fine Fe-containing mineral dust particles which are plentiful in that area. We propose to use an array of micro-spectroscopy analytical methods to characterize chemical composition of individual particles, their morphology, phase and hygroscopic properties. The techniques are capable of providing specificity and detail on particle surface and inner composition, chemistry, morphology, phase and internal structure. Combination and cross correlation of the obtained results with in situ archived field measurements along with meteorology measurements will give us an excellent opportunity to evaluate environmental chemistry of dust specific to the geographic area of study and examine contrast in particle composition and their physico-chemical properties.
