PREMIER CAT - In situ observation of nucleation and growth of ferrihydrite from the iron Keggin ion cluster

EMSL Project ID
48954

Abstract

In this study, the kinetics and mechanism of ferrihydrite formation from the iron Keggin ion will be investigated using in situ liquid transmission electron microscopy (Liquid He CryoTEM). The requested time predicted to be 24 - 48 hrs and Dr. Browning will collaborate in obtaining and interpreting the results. The impact will be contributing to the understanding of the nucleation and growth formation of the most ubiquitous iron oxide phase in nature. OSU is local to PNNL, and we have many close ties to their facilities, so it makes sense to do this study here. We do not have the capabilities at OSU for imaging in solution. Moreover, this is the expertise of Nigel Browning's research group--observing in-situ growth of nanoclusters.
