The role of phyllosilicate minerals in mediating the temperature sensitivity of enzymatic activity in soil organic matter transformations

Abstract
The underlying idea of this proposal is the assumption that temperature sensitivity in multiple component systems can be expressed by a non-linear combination of two component systems. Our main reason to take this proposal to EMSL, however, is the desire to collect mechanistic evidence regarding the influence of temperature on the molecular integrity and resulting restrictions to functionality of enzymes in enzyme-substrate and enzyme - mineral interactions. The proposed research will improve our knowledge of substrate-enzyme-microbe-mineral interactions and so help to constrain enzymatic controls on the transformations of bioavailable carbon in terrestrial systems. In doing so we will contribute to the EMSL science theme "Terrestrial and Subsurface Ecosystems" and address DOE's research mission by promoting the understanding of fundamental molecular-scale properties of natural and anthropogenic inputs to improve predictions of key atmospheric and environmental processes.
