Carriers for Transporting and Storing Hydrogen

Abstract
This proposal will determine the mechanistic and thermodynamic understanding required to address bottlenecks in materials capable of storing or transporting hydrogen. We propose a series of experiments including detailed characterization that will advance molecular control of hydrogen interactions with both solid and liquid phases relevant to DOE programs in hydrogen energy technologies. A range of applications relevant to DOE interests in energy storage systems are being investigated. EMSL strengths in NMR spectroscopy and TEM observation will be leveraged to identify reaction pathways and key intermediates that control how hydrogen is bound and released from high surface area solids (e.g. MOFs) and complex hydrides (e.g. Mg(BH4)2).
