Development of Solid-state NMR Methods for Characterization of Biological Materials, Catalytic Systems, Disordered Solids and Terrestrial Carbon
EMSL Project ID
60265
Abstract
This proposal covers the development of advanced solid-state NMR techniques for a variety of purposes. The first is toward the detection of quadrupolar nuclides. These challenging nuclei (ie. Zn, Mg, Mn, Cu etc) are prevalent in biology, mineralogy, as well as catalysis, but due to their intrinsic nature they are difficult to detect with traditional NMR experiments. We are developing methodologies to enable spectroscopy on these nuclei to provide molecular and electronic structural information. The second main focus will be on developing tools for environmentally relevant systems such as soils or plant materials. Each of these can be classified as complex mixtures that require methods to disentangle the components for identification and quantification.
