Development of an automated volatile organic compounds sampling system

EMSL Project ID
60948

Abstract

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs, released from plants, soil and leaf litter) are important precursors of ozone and secondary organic aerosols. Gaps in observations of vertically-resolved, chemically‐speciated VOCs severely limit our ability to assess the plant stress‐aerosol‐cloud interactions. We propose to build an automated, lightweight, compact VOCs sampling system integrated with environmental sensors for deployment in balloons to capture vertically-resolved VOCs for offline analysis using QToF-GC-MS. The platform will be deployed at the Southeastern US campaign being performed by ARM for 5 years starting in 2023, helping to foster ARM‐EMSL partnership within the ESS and ASR communities and attract several users.
