(GC4)Mechanistic Process Modeling for Subsurface Remediation

EMSL Project ID
1834

Abstract

This proposal targets mechanistic process modeling for subsurface remediation as the unifying theme for a team of researchers from four DOE labs (PNNL, LLNL, LANL, SRTC), two DOD labs (Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station, Army High Performance Computing Research Center), two academic institutions (University of Texas, University of Notre Dame), and one industry partner (IBM). The goal is to enhance our understanding of subsurface processes for the effective management and cleanup of subsurface contamination. Process modeling is addressed over a spectrum of length scales ranging from the behavior of fluid interfaces between soil grains to the interaction of plumes with field scale geochemical features. The lattice Boltzmann method is used to investigate multiphase flow at the pore scale by explicitly resolving fluid-fluid interactions within the irregular pore geometry. Standard CFD techniques are used to solve the partial differential equations representing the coupled transport and reaction problem above the pore scale. The work elements support three research projects (EMSP, SERDP, LDRD) and three Office of Environmental Management projects (EM-30, EM-40, EM-50). These projects represent problem areas that are critical to the environmental management mission of the DOE and national needs in environmental research for the assessment and remediation of hazardous waste sites.
