Probing the Reactivity of Organic Particles Using Ion Soft-Landing

EMSL Project ID
30466

Abstract

Formation and atmospheric processing of particulate matter is one of the focus areas emphasized by EMSL. Organic coatings on atmospheric aerosols determine the surface chemistry that particles undergo during their lifecycle in the atmosphere. In particular, reactive and non-reactive uptake by particles and their ability to act as cloud or ice nuclei is determined by the types of functional groups present on the surface. Characterization of chemical composition and chemical transformations of organic aerosols (OA) is both a major challenge and the area of greatest uncertainty in current aerosol research. Because most analytical techniques provide bulk characterization of the composition of organic aerosols, obtaining information on the identity of the functional groups on the surface is even more challenging. The proposed project will focus on the development of a new method for probing the presence of reactive functional groups on the surface of organic aerosols and their proxies using reactive landing of mass-selected ions.
