Understanding the influence of radiation exposure on ceria nanoparticle surface chemistry

EMSL Project ID
30507

Abstract

Primary focus of this work is to study the effect of radiation exposure on the surface chemistry of cerium oxide. High quality, single and polycrystalline thin films of ceria will be synthesized using molecular beam epitaxy and nanoparticles will be synthesized using wet chemical routes. Both particles and films will be exposed to variable and cumulative dose of the He+ radiation over 2-8 MeV and the changes in the oxidation state of Cerium will be monitored through in situ XPS analysis. It is anticipated that the out come of this proposal, as explained in the main text, will significantly improve the mechanistic understanding of the role of cerium oxide in protecting from ROI species.
