Complex Oxide Heteroepitaxial Growth of Novel Electronic and Magnetic Heterostructures

EMSL Project ID
35200

Abstract

Complex oxide heteroepitaxial growth of pure and magnetically doped perovskite films will be studied with the dual goals of: (i) enhancing understanding of the details of the growth process, and, (ii) obtaining new functionality through well-controlled growth and adequately-characterized material. Pulsed laser deposition and molecular beam epitaxy will be used as the growth techniques. Our initial focus will be on the laser ablation of LaAlO3 onto SrTiO3(001). Of interest is the relationship between stoichiometry and two-dimensional electron gas behavior at the interface. We will also explore Co and Cr doping of SrTiO3 films and SrTiO3/LaTiO3 interfaces with the aim of understanding the effect of magnetic dopants on attendant electronic properties.
