On-Line Determination of Selected Vapor-Phase Hoffmann List Compounds by PTR-MS
EMSL Project ID

Abstract
Few consumer products have undergone the scrutiny applied to tobacco cigarettes. Selected carcinogenic components found in tobacco smoke are compiled in the Hoffmann List, which presently contains 67 analytes of interest. Quantitative methods for determining Hoffmann list analytes are well-defined, however most of these methods are limited to determination of few analytes concurrently or to off-line measurements. Many analytical difficulties are encountered in determining tobacco smoke constituents due to the complex nature of the aerosol matrix and the instability and low population of some of the analytes of interest. Many of these difficulties may be overcome through the use of Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS), as this method is specific to organic volatiles, allows for removal of inorganic interferences, has resolution to pptv levels, and can accomplish on-line measurements. I propose to observe and quantitate volatile organic constituents such as formaldehyde, acrolein, acetaldehyde, benzene, toluene, styrene, 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, and methyl ethyl ketone found in 1R4F and 2R4F reference cigarette smoke generated by one or more automated smoking machines [Condor, KC Automation; AMESA, ?] at the Life Sciences Laboratory in Richland, Washington using the portable PTR-MS system managed by Dr. Michael Alexander. The results will be compared to those found by other methods, and accepted by government and industry, to determine the suitability of PTR-MS as an improved analytical tool. This proposed research will be presented as a poster at the Tobacco Sciences Research Conference in September 2003 in Norfolk, Virginia and should contribute to a Master’s Thesis.
