Multinuclear NMR Studies of and Earth and Energy Systems

EMSL Project ID
60243

Abstract

A team of researchers at PNNL carries out studies that utilize high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)spectroscopy in areas of national need for biological and energy sciences. The research projects includescientific explorations in energy, materials, synthesis, and geochemical sciences. The proposed research on anumber of NMR instruments will advance and accelerate the research goals of multiple energy-related projectsat PNNL and leverages advances already made by members of the team in the development and use of uniqueNMR probes and experiments at EMSL. A number of investigations with this instrument will be in situ studies thatare at the forefront of research efforts probing atomic and molecular structure and dynamics under conditionsrelevant to real-world applications in areas important to DOE and the nation. The four programs that will beprimary users of this spectrometer are the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR; Karl Mueller, PNNLLead PI), an Energy Innovation Hub supported by DOE and led by Argonne National Laboratory (George Crabtree,PI); Transdisciplinary Approaches to Realize Novel Catalytic Pathways to Energy Carriers (Johannes Lercher, PI)supported by the BES/CSGB Catalysis Science Program; Fundamental Mechanisms of Reactivity at ComplexGeochemical Interfaces (Kevin Rosso, PI) supported by the BES/CSGB Geosciences Program; and Nucleationand Self-assembly of Hierarchical Materials (Jim De Yoreo, PI) supported by BES/MSE Synthesis and ProcessingScience Program.
