Determining the Metabolome and Lipidome of Amniotic Fluid Across Gestation

EMSL Project ID
60947

Abstract

The existing literature suggests that the composition of AF is dynamic and changes across gestation. It is rich in proteins, lipids, oligosaccharides, RNAs, and metabolites that potentially influence fetal development through bioactivities11, and AF proteins and metabolites from human cross-sectional samples appear to evolve over the course of pregnancy. Alterations between different trimesters, however, have not been confirmed within the same pregnancy because serial AF sampling within the same pregnancy is not feasible in humans. Our scientific premise is that the composition of this environment, where content and volume change dynamically across
gestation, is a key determinant of fetal health and development.
