Collaborative Access Team: Pacific Northwest Cryo-EM Center (PNCC)
EMSL Project ID
50414
Abstract
PNNL will create and operate the Pacific Northwest Center for Cryo-EM (PNCC), a state-of-the-art national center for cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) that will rapidly and efficiently collect and process high resolution cryo-EM data and that will 'cross-train' scientists in the theory and practice of single particle cryo-EM and cryo- electron tomography (cryo-ET), with a special emphasis on membrane proteins. Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have partnered to establish the PNCC in Portland, Oregon. The PNCC will build on excellence at PNNL and OHSU in high resolution imaging, with outstanding facilities for sample preparation, cryo-EM and computational analysis. PNNL has long-standing experience in professional and robust user programs, in high resolution transmission electron microscopy and in high performance computing while OHSU is an emerging leader in single particle cryo-EM and the cross-training of scientists in this field. Collaborative relationships with FEI via the OHSU-FEI Living Lab and the OHSU-FEI cryo-EM school, in combination with partnerships between the center and organizations specializing in computation hardware and software, further bolster the center’s capabilities.
